James Earl Jones Returns…

James Earl JonesSome exciting news from the Official Star Wars site, James Earl Jones with be returning to reprise his role as Darth Vader in a special rebroadcast of the Star Wars Rebels premiere episode, Spark of Rebellion, on October 26th at 7PM ET/PT on ABC.

According to Executive Producer, Dave Filoni:

“We wanted to do something special for the ABC broadcast. We’ve added a scene which gives audiences insight into the Inquisitor and includes a cameo by Darth Vader voiced by the distinguished actor James Earl Jones.”

Should be a lot of fun!

My first reaction to this announcement was to think of the various “ersatz Vaders” I can remember from the Star Wars video games of the 1990s; some were better than others, but it is something that they’re getting the original. I’m conscious all the same that it’s been basically ten years since James Earl Jones’s last contributions to his role, as fine as they sounded to me.

    After thinking this had to amount to a subtle announcement that Darth Vader’s appearances in Rebels would be distinctly limited, though, it finally hit me that he wasn’t appearing just in a new “very special episode,” but in an addition to the first episode. What with it being all too easy to be suspicious of the new creators as bending every effort to bringing the impressions of some people about “the good old days” to mind, I was surprised they’d offer the possibility of some getting hyperbolic all over again about changes every time they turned around (although again, I try not to overreact there…)
